A Connecticut woman has been busted for having sex in a library restroom and her kids, who were safely in the library, have been taken into custody by the authorities. The woman is homeless – that is, she has no cozy private corner of her own and probably no money to 'get a room.' She stays at a shelter. The guy she was with “escaped before police arrived,” but police apparently have identified him.
The charges are severe, big-time: “risk of injury to a minor, public indecency and disorderly conduct.”
And surprise of surprise, “It was not immediately clear if she has a lawyer.”
I find this story so terribly depressing, especially set against news of billions of bonuses for economic criminals who brought down the world’s economy and news of war criminals enjoying lots of tv face-time and lucrative speaking gigs.
I find this story horrifying, not because of the lovers’ indiscretion (they were “caught” by a shocked woman and her 4-year-old coming into the restroom), but because of their lack of options. I don’t support public sex when the public haven’t consented, so I am certainly not advocating nooky in unlocked public spaces where other people can be surprised against their will. But I doubt that this couple was just out for some reckless kink.
And now I’m just going to make it up. Since we haven’t been given many details, I’m totally projecting here, but I suspect that this woman just might have preferred a king-size bed, Egyptian cotton sheets, fresh-squeezed lemonade next to the bed, some sweet music on the Bose and all the time in the world. She would have preferred leaving her kids with a baby-sitter, instead of looking at picture-books sitting in the library’s children’s room.
And don’t get me started on the tone of moral outrage in the reports – when we know that a surprising number of our deceitful, philandering (always wanted to use that word) male lawmakers and religious leaders are the last people who should be throwing stones.
Instead of being arrested, this woman should be given a decent job, some clean digs and a chance at love.
